HTC unveils

Mobile device maker HTC has shifted up a gear and announced a handheld based not on Windows Mobile but Windows Vista. Dubbed Shift, the sub sub-notebook boasts the full array of wireless connectivity, including 3G HSPDA.
Shift is essentially a step up from the X7500 Advantage HTC unveiled in February this year. The new model is slightly larger, with a 7in widescreen display and a 30GB hard drive. Since it runs Windows Vista Business, presumably it has a decent CPU and GPU, though HTC declined to provide a detailed specification for the machine.

It did say Shift will feature Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.0, quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE and tri-band UMTS HSDPA connectivity. Although HTC didn't say so, the device also has a front-mounted webcam for video calls, and fingerprint scanner. It has at least one full-size USB port.

When closed the machine measures around 19 x 13.5 x 3cm, the manufacturer indicated - or "about the size of two DVD cases", as it put it.

Shift is due to make its way into the hands of handheld users in Q3. HTC promised more details closer to that time.
